Clinching the 2012 SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup season championship lined up easy for Stevan McAleer who only needed to start the race to claim victory. Nevertheless the Scotsman was very relieved when his Mazda eagerly fired to life on race morning at the Petit Le Mans Powered by Mazda event at Road Atlanta. But as a true racer McAleer did more than prance and preen on the parade lap he proceeded to win a "Rock'em-Sock'em" shootout on the track.
The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear is part of the Mazda Road to Indy, the official driver development program for IndyCar. The 2012 schedule included 17 races on 10 weekends, most in conjunction with IndyCar events. Rising stars from around the world competed on road courses, street circuits and ovals in front of more than a million fans as they raced for prizes valued at $1.2 million, including a scholarship to move up and race in the 2013 Firestone Indy Lights series. The final race of the 2012 season was contested at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia where a race winner and series champion were crowned.

Winning the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship funding and making the move up to Indy Lights next year is the Holy Grail for every driver competing in the 2012 edition of the Star Mazda Championship. A recent official Star Mazda series test at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis proved how deep their desire runs.
America's only professional drifting championship – Formula Drift – roared into downtown Long Beach in southern California this April to stage round one of its ninth season. The series which put the over-steering competitive motorsport on the map in North America and furthered it across the globe drew another capacity crowd to turns nine, ten and eleven of the city's grand prix street circuit, and again Mazda teams were in the running. RX-8 fielded by sport compact luminaries Bergenholtz Racing and rotary specialists Kyle Mohan Racing duked it out with heavy hitters fielding BMW, Chevy and Ford, among others, in the battle by the sea.
Big things are on the horizon for little cars, especially in racing. This year marks the first of an experiment in affordable, accessible motorsport, built entirely around showroom stock subcompact, or "B segment," front wheel-drive vehicles.

The 2011 Formula DRIFT championship was a bruising one. As the professional drifting series finished off its eighth season at the “House of Drift,” Irwindale Speedway, October 8, it also decided the closest title race to date. While no Mazda teams were part of that chase, Kyle Mohan and the Kyle Mohan Racing team did succeed in finishing top 10 in series points for the season after a strong year in the Nexen Tire MazdaTrix Mazda RX-8.
