FAQs – ANSWERS TO ALL THINGS ELECTRIC

  • Can a PHEV run on gas only?

The Mazda CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV don’t run purely on the gas engine. While the gas engine will, at times, serve as the vehicle’s primary power source, it also acts as a generator to ensure the EV battery remains at a minimum state of charge to provide a seamless hybrid drive experience.

How can I charge my PHEV at home?

Thanks to its versatile charging port, charging a Mazda CX-90 PHEV or CX-70 PHEV is easy. Using the portable Level 1 charging cable that comes with your vehicle, simply plug your vehicle into a regular wall socket to draw electricity directly from the grid. If you are looking to get the job done faster, you can install a universal Level 2 home charger to deliver a faster supply of power.

How often do I need to charge my PHEV?

For the optimal driving experience, charge every night. Plug in and gradually top up the battery when not in use. For long drives or those weekends away when your battery runs low, your gas engine is there to provide backup power for your PHEV, taking you further until you are able to recharge again.

What kind of charging port is on the CX-90 and CX-70 PHEV models?

The J1772 ports on the CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV are configured to work with Level 1 and Level 2 charging cables.

Does the CX-90 and CX-70 PHEV models come with a charging cable?

Yes, the CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV both come standard with a portable Level 1 charging cable to plug into common 120-volt outlets.

Can the Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 PHEV be charged in the rain?

Yes. Customers are not exposed to risk of electric shock when charging in the rain. However, we recommend you do not charge the high voltage battery outside if there is heavy rain, strong winds or lightning.

Remove water with a clean cloth if the charge connector or charge plug is wet. Avoid touching the charge port or charge cable with wet hands.

The charging port is designed so that it isn’t a problem if small amounts of water or dust get in the port when charging the car. Additionally, there is a cap that covers the charging port and a partitioning seal that helps keep the port dry and clean.

How do I find public charging stations near me?

You can visit Chargepoint to find public charging stations near you. Owners can also use the MyMazda App to search for and navigate to public charging stations near their home, workplace or other destinations. In addition, owners can also use the ChargePoint app to explore charging stations, view user-generated reviews, check current pricing and pay for their charging sessions.

Can I plug in my Mazda CX-90 or CX-70 PHEV vehicle at any public charging station?

The CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV are compatible with Level 2 charging solutions found at many public charging stations, but not Level 3 (DC Fast) solutions. PHEV cannot charge at Tesla Supercharging stations and is not compatible with the CHAdeMO DC Connector.

  • Is there a way to optimize the range?

Yes. Like fuel efficiency with gas engines, your speed, and the use of electrical features within the car that rely on battery power, such as air-conditioning or heated seats, may also affect the vehicle’s range. Reducing the energy consumption of the vehicle will increase the range.
To maximize driving range, consider these steps:

    • - Pre-heating or pre-cooling your vehicle’s cabin via the MyMazda App while charging.3
    • - Parking in a garage to minimize the effects from extreme weather.
    • - Drive efficiently by avoiding heavy acceleration and high speeds, which can drain the battery faster.
    • - Check your tire pressure often from within the vehicle via the tire pressure sensor; underinflated tires can negatively impact range.

How does temperature affect Mazda electrified vehicles’ driving range?

Lithium-ion batteries prefer an ideal temperature of 77-95° F (25-35° C). If the battery is too cold, range, charging times and performance can decline. Range is less affected by hot weather, but the battery can degrade more quickly and charge more slowly.

What if I need to drive a longer distance and have range anxiety?

Since the CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV are gasoline/electric hybrid vehicles, the gasoline engine is there to back up the electric motor when battery charge becomes low. You can fill your PHEV up with gas at any available gas station.

  • What can I do if I run out of battery charge on the road?

The CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV switch over to the gas engine for power when battery charge drops below a certain level. While driving, the vehicles can also employ “Charge Mode” that will use the engine to charge the battery up to a preset level of charge.

Do electrified cars give off emissions?

When the CX-90 PHEV or CX-70 PHEV are operated in EV mode, there are no emissions from the vehicle's tailpipe. During longer driving distances, when the engine turns on, the PHEV performs similar to a traditional hybrid vehicle, consuming less fuel and producing fewer emissions than similar conventional vehicles.

While the CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV can operate on 100% electric power, you cannot operate the vehicles without gasoline in the tank.

What kind of battery is equipped with the Mazda CX-90 PHEV?

CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV are equipped with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Is the battery covered by a warranty?

Yes, the CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV lithium-ion batteries come with a High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty. This warranty is for 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. In TZEV states, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply. See your Mazda Dealer for Limited Warranty details.

    • The High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty period is 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

For vehicles registered in California and other states that have adopted California’s emissions regulations under Section 177 of the Federal Clean Air Act, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply. This extended emission warranty coverage is for vehicles certified as a Transitional Zero Emissions Vehicle as indicated on the vehicle emission control information label. In TZEV states, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply.

The High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty period begins on the Date of First Service. “Date of First Service” means the first date the Mazda Vehicle is delivered to the first retail purchaser, is leased, or is placed into service as a company vehicle use (e.g., as a demonstrator, rental, or fleet vehicle), whichever is earliest. This Limited Warranty does not mean that the High Voltage Battery is defect-free. For this reason, Mazda provides this Limited Warranty in order to remedy during the warranty period any such defects in materials and workmanship subject to the exclusions indicated under “WHAT IS NOT COVERED.” The vehicle must be brought to an Authorized Mazda Dealer for all warranty service. The Authorized Mazda Dealer will, without charge for parts or labor, either repair or replace the defective High Voltage Battery using a new, remanufactured or factory-reconditioned High Voltage Battery with a suitable energy capacity level at the time of warranty repair. See your Mazda Dealer for High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty details.

    Can car batteries be recycled?

The batteries used in plug-in hybrids can be recycled. The batteries are lithium-ion type—just like those in laptops and mobile phones.

  • What sort of credits or rebates am I eligible for if I purchase this vehicle?

You may be eligible for tax credits when purchasing a PHEV or when installing a home charger. Additional rebates may be available—please visit your state or local government websites to find the latest rebate information in your area. Click here to learn more.
